Equine Health Management - Foot and Shoeing Expert Dave Kumpf Questions (For answers, scroll down or click on
question) Questions and Answers A: Try to schedule riding the one horse when it is feeding time for the horse staying in. That will keep his attention on his feeding and he won't notice the horse going out. It is also good to have someone stay inside with him to watch that he doesn't get hurt while you are out with the other horse. He will get used to it in time and will accept being alone.
Q: Our quarter horse has a quarter crack on each foot and they have continued to travel despite special shoes, bell boots, and suppliments. His feet are soft and sometimes too hard. We have not tried patching as these cracks are probably from kicking against the stall which we are now padding. I have heard of a product used on race horses called Equilox(sp) that is polymer that may stop the travel of the cracks. Any info on this product? We are just afraid expensive patching may not stay in. A: It sounds like this is a balance problem and hoof care problem. Without a picture, it is hard to say. But, I would suggest a bar shoe and unweight the crack. Equilox is a patch product but would only be helpful if the problem of hoof capsul imbalance was corrected first.
Q: My daughter's 2 1/2 year old Norwegian fjord has recently started to hit his back hooves with his front during trotting or cantoring. He has regular visits with the farrier every 6 weeks. A: Bring front feet back and get horse shod at 4 week intervals.
Q: I am new to horse ownership and would like to know the correct way to pick out horses feet? I don't want to do it wrong. A: To correctly pick your horse's feet out, ask your shoer to show you the way to hold your horse's feet. Then take your pick and clean the valleys at either side of the frog. Clean out all stones and dirt.
