PAUL LOOMIS
Select Breeders Service, Inc.
was founded in 1987 by Paul R. Loomis. Mr. Loomis earned an M.S. in Equine Reproduction
from Colorado State University in 1982 for his work specializing in stallion semen
Cryopreservation. He has published numerous papers on semen freezing, as early as 1983,
and has been actively involved in research and commercial application of frozen stallion
semen for over 13 years. From 1982 through 1986 Mr. Loomis was General Manager of Green
Hills Farm, Inc., a South Carolina Hannoverian breeding farm, which based its entire
breeding program on frozen semen AI. During that period, more than 120 mares were
inseminated with frozen semen which was processed by Mr. Loomis or which was imported from
Europe. This was the single largest commercial breeding program in the United States
involving frozen stallion semen.
In 1987, the same year he founded Select Breeder
Service, Mr. Loomis became Director of Research for Hamilton-Thorn Research.
Hamilton-Thorn is the Massachusetts based company responsible for development of the
Equitainer System for cooled transported semen. His research with Hamilton-Thorn was
directed at development and refinement of computerized, automated instrumentation for
objective analysis of sperm motility.
Since its conception in 1987, Select Breeders
Service has grown steadily. In 1992, Mr. Loomis and Mr. Whit Byers co-founded Select
Breeders sister company, Select Breeders Southwest, Inc. Located in Aubrey, Texas,
SBSW is operated by Mr. Byers, MD and is home to the most complete mobile semen freezing
laboratory in the industry. With our mobile lab, Select Breeders is able to offer its
exceptional freezing services to clients all around the country. Also in 1992, Mr. Loomis
moved the headquarters of Select Breeders Service to its permanent home on the grounds of
Hilltop Farm, Inc., in Colora, Maryland.
Along with the custom semen freezing services, Paul Loomis and Select Breeders Service have been actively involved
in the import, export, and distribution of semen throughout the world for over 13 years.
This has led to a vast network of affiliated veterinarians and breeders experienced in the
crucial aspects of handling frozen semen. In 1990 Select Breeders Service, Inc., in
cooperation with a prominent breeding farm, conducted freezing evaluations on numerous
stallions standing in Germany.
Today, Select Breeders Service, Inc. is
committed to maintaining a leadership role in responsible development of the emerging
equine frozen semen industry. If you are considering frozen semen for your stallions
remember that experience and quality of service sets Select
Breeders Service apart from the rest. [Back]
